Robert-Gerwig-Schule

Furtwangen im Schwarzwald, Germany

About the School

Founded in 1850 in Furtwangen, at the heart of Germany’s Black Forest watchmaking tradition, the Robert-Gerwig-Schule has been training professional watchmakers for more than 150 years. Its three-year full-time state vocational programme leads to a recognised journeyman qualification and combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technical training. Students learn to inspect, service and repair both mechanical and electronic watches while developing core skills in filing, sawing, turning, milling, measuring, adjusting and manufacturing replacement components. The curriculum also covers restoration, escapement and striking mechanisms, pocket and wristwatches, and the diagnosis of electronic timepieces. Practical workshop training is designed to match the standards of a dual apprenticeship, preparing graduates for careers in watch servicing, restoration, luxury retail and independent workshops. With its long history and strong emphasis on precision engineering, the Robert-Gerwig-Schule remains one of Germany’s important institutions for professional watchmaking education.
