HTL Karlstein

Karlstein an der Thaya, Austria

About the School

Founded in 1873, HTL Karlstein is one of Austria’s historic centres for watchmaking education and the country’s only full-time school dedicated to precision and timekeeping technology. Based in Karlstein an der Thaya, the school combines traditional horological craftsmanship with modern technical training across a four-year programme. Students learn to manufacture and replace watch components, repair and restore clocks and watches, work with traditional hand tools and use contemporary electronic measuring equipment. Training progresses from the fundamentals of watchmaking to work on modern mechanical chronographs and complex timepieces, while also developing broader skills in precision engineering. Alongside its full-time programme, HTL Karlstein also provides vocational training for watchmaking apprentices from across Austria. Graduates complete a skilled worker examination and are prepared for careers in watch repair, restoration, workshop management, retail, independent business and the wider international watch industry.
