Today, I’d like to talk about a historical Austrian watch brand that dates back to the 19th century: Carl Suchy & Söhne. Before discussing the revival of this brand by Robert Punkenhofer, an Austrian art curator and collector, let’s dive into its rich history.
Founded by Carl Suchy in 1822 in Vienna, Austria, this family-owned clockmaking business gained recognition for its craftsmanship and innovative designs. Throughout the 19th century, the brand became renowned for producing high-quality watches known for their precision and timeless elegance. Winning prestigious awards and earning patronage from royalty and aristocrats across Europe, it became the largest watchmaking enterprise of the Habsburg monarchy, serving notable figures such as Emperor Franz Joseph I, Empress Sissi, and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.
After disappearing several times over the years, the brand was relaunched in 2017. Today, Carl Suchy & Söhne produces minimalist-style watches that combine Viennese elegance with Swiss precision, starting with their first model, the Carl Suchy & Söhne Waltz N°1. This new model, presented in 2023, offers a modern update with advanced technology and sustainable production practices while preserving its Austrian heritage. Let’s take a closer look at this timepiece.
Key Features of the Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere Titan Case Grey Dial
Case
The Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere Titan Case Grey Dial features a 100m water-resistant titanium case with a striking mix of polished and satin-finished surfaces. Measuring 40.8 mm in diameter and 12.2 mm thick, this lightweight watch sits comfortably on the wrist, making it ideal for daily wear. It strikes the perfect balance between sportiness and elegance.
Dial
The Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere Titan Case Grey Dial showcases a grey dial with rhodium-plated concave indices, skeletonized Dauphine hands also rhodium-plated and filled with SuperLumiNova for enhanced readability in low-light conditions. A gold seconds hand adds a touch of refinement. The dial is finished with a lacquered surface and features an integrated concave edge for added depth.
One of the standout features of this watch is its unique date display. The jumping date window moves from day to day, ensuring vibrancy on the dial and transforming the watch’s appearance every 24 hours. This sophisticated design mirrors the dynamic second disk from the Carl Suchy & Söhne Waltz No. 1.
Movement
Inside the Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere Titan Case Grey Dial is the automatic CSS201 movement, built on a Dubois Dépraz DB9000 and an ETA 2892/2A. Offering a 42-hour power reserve and beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, this calibre was crafted by renowned Swiss watchmaker Marc Jenni. It is adorned with refined details, including a gold-plated oscillating weight engraved with the facade of Vienna’s Belvedere Palace and the watch’s individual serial number.
Strap
The Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere Titan Case Grey Dial comes with an integrated, flexible grey rubber strap equipped with quick-release spring bars and a stainless-steel folding clasp. The inner side of the strap is decorated with a pattern inspired by the baroque forms of the gardens at Vienna’s Belvedere Palace, adding an interesting touch.
Price of the Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere Titan Case Grey Dial
The Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere Titan Case Grey Dial is not a limited edition and is priced at €9,900 (including taxes), approximately AED 40,000.
Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere Titan Case Grey Dial: A Legacy of Austrian Horology Revived
The Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere Titan Case Grey Dial is a modern sports watch that embodies both the Viennese heritage of the brand and contemporary watchmaking innovation. I was pleasantly surprised by this timepiece, both in terms of price and design. It offers many advantages, with a level of craftsmanship that should not be overlooked. As a bonus, the brand received the Butterfly Mark certification from Positive Luxury in June 2024, recognizing its commitment to sustainable development. Several production steps integrate environmentally friendly practices to minimize the carbon footprint while highlighting the brand’s dedication to ethical and sustainable production.
All in all, I greatly appreciated this model, which possesses a distinct identity. A special thanks to Méline, the Brand Manager, who introduced me to these watches under the bright Geneva sun.
