Hello, today I would like to talk about a brand that I vaguely knew existed before having the opportunity to discover it in Dubaï. It is the eponymous brand Fiona Krüger. Before presenting this limited edition, it seems pertinent to revisit the journey of this Scottish artist-designer.
Fiona Krüger is a globetrotter who has shaped both her dynamic character and her unique watch creations through her many life experiences abroad. Having grown up in France, this Scotswoman lived in Mexico from the age of 10, before moving to Brazil, then to Scotland to finish her secondary education and study fine arts. She then went to South Africa where she worked in an art gallery, and later to Switzerland to pursue her Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship at ECAL with the intention of becoming a teacher. It was during this master’s program that her taste for watchmaking developed. One of the course sponsors was Audemars Piguet, and they asked her class to design a watch for them.
After launching her company in 2013 and presenting her first Skull collection, which remains a unique curiosity in the watchmaking landscape, I present to you a limited series from her second Chaos collection. Now, let’s focus on the watch.
What are the features of the Fiona Krüger Fracture Perpétuel?
Case
The Fiona Krüger Fracture Perpétuel features a hand-finished recycled titanium case that harmoniously combines brushed and polished surfaces. Tonneau-shaped, this case with a crown at 12 o’clock measures 48 mm in length, 40 mm in width, and only 8 mm in thickness, making it very comfortable to wear.
Dial
The Fiona Krüger Fracture Perpétuel is adorned with a two-part dial separated by a fracture. Made by the dial factory Comblémine of Kari Voutilainen, this hand-polished salmon-colored dial with off-center floating indexes and dauphine hands is bold and elegant. Indeed, the fracture is a visual representation of time, a moment of chaos etched into our landscape. Conversely, the sunburst brushed dial is very classic and refined. The creator loved the idea of taking this perfect dial and breaking it in two.
Movement
The Fiona Krüger Fracture Perpétuel houses an exclusive manual-winding movement called “Chaos.” Designed by Fiona Krüger and produced by Agenhor, this movement features geometry that matches the creator’s aesthetic vision, interpreting explosions and the chaos they produce. Indeed, the bridges are shaped like angular shards and the wheels are formed as if struck by a shock wave. The gear train visible through the fracture in the dial extends unusually from top to bottom, ending with a hand-painted mainspring barrel with an explosion motif offering a 50-hour power reserve.
Strap
The Fiona Krüger Fracture Perpétuel comes with a green ostrich leather strap and a second green apple natural leather strap.
How much does the Fiona Krüger Fracture Perpétuel?
The Fiona Krüger Fracture Perpétuel is a limited edition of 7 pieces, available for sale at AED 138,000 or CHF 34,000 (excluding VAT).
Fiona Krüger Fracture Perpétuel: A fusion of creativity, precision and innovation
The Fiona Krüger Fracture Perpétuel is a captivating collaboration entirely made in Switzerland. Here again, the chaotic and punk attitude of the design contrasts with the scientific and orderly discipline of watchmaking. Every detail of the watch reminds me of a place I love so much, Dubai. Indeed, the colors of this piece are not random. The green and copper bicolor coloring of the watch required 12 months of research and development. It reflects the colors of the company Perpétuel, located in the DIFC of Dubai, colors that equally represent the shifting sands of the Arabian Peninsula and the flag of the United Arab Emirates.
What I like about the approach to these watches is that they are born from an emotional and purely creative starting point. No marketing brief or sales strategy, which is appreciated in a world where everything looks the same. As an artist above all, Fiona Krüger offers an innovative approach to watchmaking art and has constantly pushed the boundaries of traditional watchmaking trends, mixing new forms, colors, and mechanical prowess to create collections that are both distinctive and unconventional.
Another thing that deserves to be highlighted is Fiona’s commitment to environmentally friendly ethics. The Fracture watch features a recycled titanium case made from scrap metals from the Swiss watchmaking industry. One of the watch straps is made from apple “natural leather” and the presentation box is made from algae paper. I would like to thank Hamdan Bin Humaid and his team who allowed me to discover this watch that you will not see every day.
